Which gas is recommended for a 97 camry ce. Does the highest octane mean that it would be better for cars, ive heard that it is not true, and that it depends on the conditions that your driving in. Any inputs?

Most car dealerships will recommend a higher octane fuel in a car. Me personally, I have a 96 Camry and I use 87 octane gas and have never had a problem. 87 octane may have a few more deposits in it than say 93 or 94, but there are fuel additives you can use to take care of that. I use Berryman's Chemtool with every oil change. My car purrs like a kitten. In my opinion...try a tank of each and see which your car runs better on.

Everyone knows that on the highway, you will get better milage regardless of what you use. The question is, is it worth filling up on 92 for a lot of downtown driving? Hell, on the highway (using 87) I can get damn near 300 on half a tank, using the A/C the whole way. Around town driving with the A/C on, I will get just under 200 miles on half a tank. For best fuel efficiency...make sure you keep your oil changed, filters (oil & air) changed and everytime you change your oil, add a lil sumthin to the gas to clean out the fuel system. I guarantee you will love the results and how smoothly your car runs.

An oil I recommend is the Castrol Syntec Blend (the silver bottles). A full synthetic is not good on older engines that didn't start out on synthetics. However, the blend gives you the best of both worlds. Plus, you don't have to keep an eye on the odometer and change every 3,000. I've gone up to 4,500 before changing and everything was fine. Another thing you have to remember is that gas from different companies burns differently. In my opinion, Shell is the worst and Exxon is the best...in MY car.

Why I didn't list downtown driving mileage is the traffic condition in each local area is different,
as well as the fuel wasted because of frequently stop and speed up is different. (in your case, 1/3 of the fuel had been wasted)
But in highway, the engine almost always keep running at 2500 rpm (car speed 75mph), the gasoline performance should be closer to true.
You are right about the maintenance is an important factor of fuel economy, also the fuel quality is different between companies.
But I am curius about your fuel tank size. Can you calculate the highway fuel effeciency of your car in the unit of "miles/gallon"? Mine is about 27. TOYOTA.COM specification is 28-32. If your description was correct, yours is close to 40. You will be the best Camry owner in USA. How you can make it?

David

My tank is 16 gallons. In actuality, breaking the numbers down...my gas mileage was bout 34-36 miles per gallon. If you recall, I said close to 300 on half a tank. Usually around 280-290. 27 isn't too bad, but you can do better. I was getting numbers like that when I had my Supra! Now...your numbers are all good and fine...if the average person spends most of their time driving on highways. Most folks I know, live in the Metro area and drive in the city. Highway mileage is meaningless until it comes time for a weekend trip! I am going to give meaningful numbers for people that can relate. I'm not saying I'm the best Camry owner in America, but thank you anyway. I just take care of my ride very well. I've been through my share of cars and I plan on keeping this one for a while. I listen to it and do plenty of preventive maintenence.
