In addition to everything (bad) that has been said so far, I found with my weapon-r that the aluminum pipe also acted as a resonator of the engine NOISE (of the not-so-pleasing variety), and because it was so short, the NOISE was a lot closer to the passenger compartment. Also because it was so short (it comes to about the strut tower), it sucked the hot air from right beside the engine. My recommendation is also to build your own, perhaps using plastic/pvc pipes similar to the stock ones to reduce noise and heat conduction. Let me know how it turns out.

I wasn't happy with any of the intakes out there either. I purchased a K&N cone filter with a 3" opening and put it on the end of my stock intake. i removed the factory air box and resonator, I put a cap in the opening for the resonator. It sounds nice. Very soon I'll go to the local muffler shop and get a custom mandrel bent pipe to relocate the filter. I also plan on building a new air box from sheet metal, sprayed with high heat paint as insulation to seal out the hot air and take advantage of the stock cold air tube.

Did the same with my V6, but have not gotten around to do the air box, let me know when you have the airbox installed. I would love to check it out.
