Hi Camry-lovers!

I just joined this club. I have been having major concerns about my 1998 Camry. The latest problem started a month ago, and is a constant squeaking of brakes, especially in the mornings. Reduces during the day, but after a long stop, it does it again.

I took it to the dealers and they blame the design of the brakes. Apparently they are made of metal and they have been found to squeak and they can not be fixed!!! He quoted me $35 to look at it, 65$ an axle to fix it, and swore that it WOULD return in few days! Was he BS-ing me or has anybody else had this problem.

Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

Ragoo

Yes, they are correct. Toyota uses semi-metallic brake pads. So, it is common for there to be some squeaking. When the semi-metallic pad comes in contact with the metal rotors, some noise will be generated. I just had my brakes redone and they were fine for about a week. Now, everytime I step on the brakes lightly, there is some squeaking. I have found that it only occurs when I use light braking pressure. When I use heavier pressure(in quicker stops), I don't hear the squeaks.

It's up to you if you want to spend the money and have your brakes cleaned. But, I personally have gotten used to the sound. Afterall, it's not that loud and I only hear it when I have my windows down.

That mechanic wanted your cash, just to apply the anti-squeal paste. WHich will wear away. So just live with it, and not waste your cash.

tan

Hi guys,
Thanks for the input. I feel better now. I didn't get any of the stuff done since I had just got a 30K mile servicing done a couple months ago. I'm getting used to the squeaks now.
Ragoo

I have a '94 and I upgraded to MetalMaster brakes. They squeak, but I found that if you get them warmed up, a few fast/hard stop,s that goes away. I can usually get that taken care of by the time I get out of the parking garage.

Dan
'94 v6 xle
