Okay, here's the deal. I just lost my 96 Camry in
an accident. It was a 4 cyl. DX, but had all the
options to make it an LE (well, except for the obvious
stuff). Anyway, I am going to be getting an other Camry
and I want to stay with the Gen 3 family. The
question on this go around is do I stick with a 4 cyl. or
step up to the 6 cyl? I would love to hear opinions
for and against. Which would be easier to make mods
on when the time comes?

Holla
back...PLEASE!!!!!!

Definitely go with the V6. If you are going to
stay with Gen3, make sure you get the 1MZ-FE V6 found
in 94-96 model years. Remember, your only option is
automatic...but it's plenty powerful and will get 20mpg in mixed
city/highway driving.

There are different versions of the engine for
the Gen 3's? I was shooting for a 96. I don't mind it
being an auto. The 4 cyl I had was suprisingly strong.
Everyone swore it was a 6, I guess that's because I was
using the Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs. Made a huge
difference.

Will mods to the V6 engine be easy?

Here are all the engine choices for
Gen3:

5S-FE 2.2L 4cyl 92-96
3VZ-FE 3.0L V6 92-93
1MZ-FE
3.0L V6 94-96

The 1MZ-FE is a lighter
motor...it's faster than a 3VZ powered Camry and it gets
better mileage than the 3VZ.

The only mods you
can really put on the 1MZ-FE for Gen3 is an intake,
exhaust, spark plugs and thats about it. You can go NOS if
you dare to.

I highly doubt plugs will make
your car go faster. It will make it smoother...but for
a 5S-FE Automatic...it's just plain slow
regardless. It seems fast because alot of engine noise
resonates into the cabin giving you that illusion of going
fast. Denso Iridium Plugs are better than Bosch
Platinum +4. They last longer and burn better. Any 5S-FE
Automatic Camry Gen3 or Gen4 and Solara is slow sorry to
say.

Don't I know it! I have a 98 5S-FE 2.2L. Pretty
slow, but still looks and drives well. You can put
turbo kits on them though. I've seen heaps of pictures
of 4cyl turbo camry's (Gen 4). I'd post them, but
don't know how. I think they're on Camryman anyway.

Yeah i've seen those kits. They are mostly all custom. No one has yet produced a
safe one for sale.

From the sounds of things...you guys really know
your motors. I guess I will be ending up with the
1MZ-FE because I want another 96.

Flipside,
thanks for the info on the plugs, but I am here to tell
you that the plugs make a huge difference....I notice
better response from the gas pedal and the pick up is
much better. If the Densos are better, I can only
imagine how they will perform. I'll keep that in mind
when I get my next Camry.

Granted the Camry is
no barn burner, but with fresh plugs & oil, some
bama in a '90 Max wanted to race and he could not beat
me. No, it wasn't a race from a stop light. We were
already on the highway. He couldn't catch me and he sure
nuff couldn't close the gap between us. I know it
wasn't a beefed up Civic or Accord, but dammit a stock
Max was good enough for me. *smile*
